October 2012 ~ The Cliff Notes Of Life

Oct 31, 2012

So many of us want to take the road that is the easy road, the road more commonly traveled, the road that says we don’t have to explain why we’re going down the path we’ve chosen (or supposedly not chosen) for ourselves. We want the easy way out, we want the answers to be given to us, the quick fix, the pill that makes everything better for us, the person who is going to make us happy or the lottery ticket that is going to make us rich overnight. I’m just as “guilty” as the next person and that is why I’m taking this particular subject on because I see that I am not alone. Maybe I’m not choosing the same path as you in this lifetime but I have traveled down some bumpy roads both willingly and unwillingly, as it were.

We all do it ~ take classes to help our self-esteem, get a fitness trainer because we want to look good in our wedding gown (that is two sizes too small) or follow a modern day guru who tells us how to approach life, forget about life or simply get a new life by reading the best-selling book. It seems as if we are on an unending quest but I wonder…for what?

Usually these areas that need our attention are our hot spots for the moment. Some of them may be what spurs our intellectual, physical, emotional or spiritual growth. We take these classes over and over throughout our life referring to different teachers using different techniques to teach us, basically, the same thing. The mentors we temporarily select may be from the Amazon jungle or from a major corporation yet I wonder just how much is really getting through to us students in the end? Do we actually apply some or any of the ideas in our life so as to give it a chance for the seeds to take root in its newfound soil? There are periods of enlightenment, enrichment, entertainment and fulfillment as I have observed in some of the better classes I have attended. The atmosphere encouraged a safe foundation to share new thoughts, experience feelings and to question and ponder the exchanges without judgment. This recipe for growth is critical when we are seeking direction as to how to support ourselves while reviewing possible ideas and characters to add to our own personal life’s novel.

And what do we do with all of the notes we are writing down ~ do we actually refer to them time and again while we’re utilizing these new skills or are we busy staying busy so as not to interact with others and to be present in the moment’s step on our uneven path? Are people attending the seminar/lecture/class/sermon there to listen or to gain a certain status by being seen in public? Maybe they want to identify with others so as to appear as if they are getting the message or, for appearances sake, it makes them look as if they know what they are doing, as if they have already attained a certain level of authority with the latest “in” crowd. All forms of energy affects us to some degree and my opinion is that when we become more aware of who is surrounding us and for what reasons then we may begin to clearly identify just where the leaks in our lives are and to address them accordingly.

I know that this may be a sensitive area for some people and, if so, then I would encourage you to ask yourself as to why this is true for you? Is there some façade or person or title you are hiding behind so as to appear to be more successful, popular, wealthy, spiritual, or the like? I’ve met a few people throughout my life who I eventually realized their main motivation to become my “friend” was because of what my unusual intuitive gifts could offer them. I was somehow like a “show” animal that they could tote around and first introduce me, not as a human being and friend, but mainly as a psychic, medium, intuitive…you get the picture. Expanding upon this type of experience across the board, how many of us introduce our personal friend as “here is my doctor” (or teacher, healer, stock broker, etc.) when I believe we are so much more than just a title. Obviously at a business meeting or trade show this would prove to be par for the course however I am suggesting we look at how we introduce one other to our friends in our personal lives. We can add so much more to the introduction and the conversation than their title, I would hope, as to why they are a personal friend and confidante or more.

How often do we abridge our experiences in life so that they will fit neatly into our comfortable cubicles we have designed for ourselves ~ or make it easier to explain to others why we are involved with a group or person. Why do we take the shortcut and leave out what may be the core of why we are pursuing our dreams, our hearts, our friends or partners and our passions in this life. Is it to accommodate others and their opinions and judgments or is to satiate our self-esteem and be comforted by enhancing our self-worth? These are just a few thoughts that pass through my mind, on occasion, especially when I see who shows up, what they seek and who they “befriend.”

Do we always seek the road less traveled, the path that is worn, the high road or the winding trail in our lives that leads us back to square one? Do we prefer to live life cover to cover or do we only glimpse at the cliff notes as we take the classes that our journeys have to offer us. Yes, life does offer many opportunities for us to be tested and tried ~ to reveal who we are and what we stand for, and just as importantly, the decisions we make today represent who we are consciously choosing to become. We learn from some of these choices as we experience shame or guilt and we may find what we want or do not want but from each word and sentence that is written in each and every chapter of our lives so why would anyone want to cheat themselves and the people they love from being who they really are? As one of my favorite quotes states “You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway.”
